Clinical Study for the Effect of Loracarbef(LY 163892) in the Treatment of Acute Sinusitis

Abstract
The treatment of acute sinusitis requires an agent with activity against a wide range of bacterial pathogens, including pathogens that produce fl-lactamase. Loracarbef, a member of the carbacephem class of antibiotics resistant to fl-lactamase, was tested in a series of clinical trials for its efficacy and safety in the treatment of acute sinusitis.
We prescribed loracarbef over a 2-weeks observation period to 25 patients with acute sinusitis during the period from June 1995 to August 1995 at the Kyungpook University Hospital.
In this study, 25 patients(9 men, 16 women)were assigned to receive 400mg of loracarbef twice daily from tenth to fourteenth days.
One patient was excluded from this study because of poor complience. Among evaluable patients, a clinical cure was found in 45.8% of the loracarbef treated patients and improvement in 45.8% and failure rate was 8.3%. The overall clinical response to loracarbef was 91.6%. Loracarbef was well tolerated and side effects was negligible.
It is concluded that loracarbef is safe and effective in the treatment of sinusitis.
